Shattering the Silence
Throughout the last five years, the Foundation has supported several organizations which house women running from abusive relationships. From the first grant to Sheltering Wings Center for Women in Danville, to today's four grant recipients who focus in this area, it is clearly a passion of ours to keep these victims housed safely.
Maybe you've seen the WTHR campaign recently called 'Shattering the Silence'. It's important because educating women and children about unhealthy relationships is the only way to prevent the cycle from moving further. From their website:
"Community experts define domestic abuse as "the use of power and control within an intimate relationship that threatens a person's well being." It’s not always physical abuse. It can be mental, verbal, emotional, financial or sexual abuse. It affects all ages, both sexes, and people from all socioeconomic levels - the rich, the middle-class, and the poor."
That domestic violence affects people in all socioeconomic levels is sometimes staggering. Anyone, even your neighbor, could be in an abusive relationship.
